Redesign Your Daytime Routines for a Healthy Oral Microbiome

Build a consistent regimen for your mouth health

By sticking to a throughout-the-day regimen, you can help your gums, teeth, and beneficial mouth bacteria flourish. Here’s how:

  • Keep water near you all day, so you remember to drink often.

  • Eat lunch, ideally a veggie-rich meal, like a green salad topped with grilled chicken. Vegetables are rich in alkaline, which can help balance out the acid levels in your mouth.

  • Drink water, which will help rinse food particles and bacteria off your teeth. Try to avoid soda (even diet), which can wear down tooth enamel.

  • Rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash  (alcohol can lead to dry mouth). Then wait at least a half hour before eating or drinking again. Consider asking a holistic dentist to recommend the best product for you.

  • If hungry later in the afternoon, go for a low-carb snack, like fresh veggie sticks with hummus or a hard-boiled egg. Follow it with a drink of water.

  • Chew sugar-free gum (sweetened with xylitol or erythritol). Chewing gum stimulates the production of saliva, which will help to neutralize harmful acids in your mouth.
